Mark O'Brien's 89th-minute winner keeps Newport in the English Football League
Newport pulled off the great escape as Mark O'Brien's 89th-minute strike saw them beat Notts County 2-1 and seal their place in League Two next season.
With Hartlepool 2-1 up against Doncaster and Newport drawing 1-1, the Exiles were set to drop out of the English Football League.
But up stepped O'Brien who slammed in at the back post to secure an extraordinary win.
Mickey Demetriou and Jorge Grant exchanged goals either side of half-time as the match looked set to end a stalemate.
The Exiles were 11 points adrift of safety when rookie and Newport local Michael Flynn took over from Graham Westley in March.
But a thumping run of form saw them climb their way back from the brink to book a fifth consecutive season in the EFL.
Demetriou held his cool from the spot on 30 minutes, following Richard Duffy's foul on Lenell John-Lewis, to fire County ahead.
After the break the crowd were humbled when Grant pounced on a loose ball in the home box to level things.
With Hartlepool coming from behind to lead promoted Doncaster, Newport needed a hero and O'Brien was there to volley in.
