County keeper has Day to remember as Barnet thwarted in goalless draw

Newport secured a vital away point in their effort to stay in the Football League as they drew 0-0 at Barnet.

Barnet's Jack Taylor went closest in the early exchanges, driving forward from midfield only for his 25-yard shot to fly just wide of the mark.

Nana Kyei probably should have put the Bees ahead before the break after John Akinde burst down the right, but his shot under pressure was skewed wide.

David Pipe went close for County from Craig Reid's corner, but a drab first half remained goalless.

Elliott Johnson nearly gifted the home side the lead just before the hour-mark, but Alex Samuel could only shoot over from a tight angle.

In response, Barnet suddenly burst into life as both Simeon Akinola and Curtis Weston tested Joe Day before Mauro Vilhete forced another fine one-handed save from the Newport goalkeeper.

Day was again at his best to tip away Kyei's curling shot and while Barnet desperately pressed for a winner, they had to settle for a point.
